Samdaem Sand Bath in Kaesong

Pyongyang, July 23 (KCNA) -- The Samdaem sand bath is one of the customs handed down from olden times among the people in Kaesong area. And they usually have the sand bath during the hottest period of summer every year.

Samdaem is the name of the long sandy beach along the Mammy stream 4 km away from the centre of Kaesong Municipality. Its meaning is that it is second in the health benefits only to insam (Korean ginseng).

The sand there contains various mineral components.

The water flowing into the sandy beach also contains several ingredients, thus enhancing its medicinal value.

The treatment method is as follows:

Cover the whole body or a part of the body to be treated with the sand heated to 40-45°C. After about 10 minutes, wash the whole body clean in running water. Do the same three times a day for three days.

The Samdaem sand bath is efficacious for neuralgia, arthritis, chronic gastritis, arteriosclerosis, slipped disk, chronic bronchitis and other diseases.

Kaesong Municipality remodeled the sand beach and built service facilities and treatment places for the convenience of the people.

The Samdaem sand bath was registered as a part of local intangible cultural heritage of the DPRK in 2016. -0-
