Ogasan Yew, Natural Monument of DPRK

Pyongyang, September 14 (KCNA) -- In virgin forest in the Ogasan Nature Reserve in Karim-ri, Hwaphyong County, Jagang Province of the DPRK, there is Ogasan Yew growing for more than 1 100 years.

Ogasan Yew is growing thick verdure thanks to the national heritage protection policy of the state.

The tree is 16.5 meters high, 4.1 meters wide in its root neck and 3.6 meters wide in girth of trunk. And the crown width is about 7 meters.

The shape of tree is elongated and the branches are almost horizontally oriented, with the lower branches slightly down and the upper branches up.

The bark is thin and red brown and there are deep striations on the trunk.

Ogasan Yew is the tallest and oldest tree among yews in the country. It serves as a precious natural treasure of the country proving the natural history of Mt Oga and a natural monument of significance in education of the rising generation and scientific research. -0-
